Gretchen Schaefer of Great Blue Mosaic Talks about Creating Mosaic Art in Portland Maine

Mosaic allows her to combine her love of texture, color and fine craftsmanship to create images inspired by the natural world.

Gretchen Schaefer has been an artist/craftsperson since childhood.  She turned to mosaic in 2000. Mosaic allows her to combine her love of texture, color and fine craftsmanship to create images inspired by the natural world.

Her influences are diverse, from the patterns and stylized forms of Roman and Byzantine mosaic to the paintings of Gustav Klimt.  She concentrates on natural images, notably wildlife found where land and water meet – fish, dragonflies and birds, in particular herons, to which she has dedicated a series of mosaics.

The use of natural stone in combination with classic mosaic materials such as smalti, porcelain, marble and glass allows her to contrast color, texture and reflectivity in her work.

She does business as Great Blue Mosaic, in Portland, Maine.

Gretchen creates wall mosaics, mosaic vessels and wearable mosaic jewelry.  She also accepts custom work and can work with contractors to create inset custom mosaic panels.
